Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
We return today to Jesus as our sanctuary. He is our “hiding place” (Isaiah 32:2) in all situations. In John 14:1a, Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled.” As I always point out when we study these words of our Savior, He knew that He was going to die on the Cross the very next day. Any of us in that circumstance would be thinking of our own trouble – and no one would blame us for so doing. Jesus, of course, is different, including in His overarching perspective. He knew that He would accomplish His grand task of salvation; He also knew that difficulties would continue to crowd around His people. Bad news, negative influences, strong opposition – Jesus understood perfectly that all of these things would vex His followers. Thus, He speaks directly to us, warns us of the dangers, and points us to the things that are good, including heaven (John 14:2-6). Our hearts are His, and even the worst of woes cannot alter that truth.
