Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The intrinsic creativity of Jesus is presented in John 1:1-5. “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made” (verse 3). Thus, He has fashioned both inorganic and organic material. Verse 4 clarifies that “in Him was life.” Certainly this statement includes human life. Psalm 139:14a exults, “I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” When machinery breaks down, it never gets better on its own. Our bodies, though, can heal themselves, mending broken bones, relieving aches and pains, casting off viruses and bacteria. The beneficial effect of sleep in this process is also God-given, for “He giveth His beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2). The preacher and author Thomas Merton, meditating upon the intricacy of the human body, marveled that the lungs are “a frail piece of flesh, yet, though in continual action, of a long use.” Yes, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by Jesus, the Creator of life.
