Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Jesus never stops. Obviously, I mean that in a good way. Sometimes we might say of an overactive child, “He just never stops,” or you might say of your wife, “She just never stops.” (You might say that of your wife, but I would never even think of saying that about my beloved!) With Jesus, everything about Him is good. He never stops in an ontological sense: in time and space, there is no place where Jesus is not and is not active. We require relaxation, rest (including sleep), and, at a certain age, retirement. Jesus does not need these things. Genesis 2:2 tells us that, on the seventh day of Creation, “He rested.” Yes, He ceased from the work of creating time, space, energy, matter, and man, but He continued on in His everlasting effort. Colossians 1:17b reminds us of Jesus that “by Him all things consist [hold together].” His labor is ongoing; Jesus never stops in holding things together. Thus, when we think that we are holding on by the proverbial thread, we find instead that it is Jesus holding on to us and holding us together.
