Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) speaks of His return to earth with a victorious military force: “And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean” (19:14). Some scoff at the mention of horses, considering this means of transportation in warfare to be hopelessly archaic. Thoughtful people, though, recognize that God the Son has no need of modern implements of warfare such as aircraft carriers, submarines, planes, and tanks. Technological advances that could lead to new types of conflict (for example, cyber warfare or the weaponization of satellites) cannot match the omniscient intellect of our Lord. Nuclear warfare cannot thwart our Savior, for He is the One Who constructed the atom: “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). Furthermore, “by Him all things consist (Colossians 1:17b) – that is, He holds all things together, including the atom. The use of “horses,” then, is a visual reminder that the ultimate power rests not with “the armies which were in heaven” but with Jesus Christ. What is true on that future day is true today, as well.
