Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
“Thou art worthy,” says Revelation 5:9 of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This ascription of praise is part of a heavenly “new song.” Five times in Revelation 4-5 and fourteen times in the entire book, we find references to music. It really is not surprising that music is given such a place of emphasis, for “a new song” celebrates a new act of God. Since He is eternally creative, new songs must abound. Exodus 15, for example, is a powerful hymn of Moses that records God’s great deliverance of the Israelites at the Red Sea. This was at the very beginning of Israel’s history as a nation, for they went into Egypt as a family and were slaves for 400 years. Certainly the mighty miracle of the crossing on dry land deserved “a new song”! The entire book of Psalms is a songbook, covering a number of different circumstances requiring or recording the direct and personal intervention of God. In the sense of remembering God’s goodness, then, each one of our lives is “a new song” waiting to be written and sung.
