Putting the I into WISDOM
The Christians who have most influenced me for good have had a fully functional familiarity with the book of Proverbs. They were (and are) able to take their considerable knowledge and apply it to their lives, providing both godly examples and godly advice. Join with me as each of us endeavors to put the I into WISDOM. Let us seek to exemplify God’s wisdom in our daily lives. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Yesterday, we considered the listening side of Proverbs 25:12, which says, “As an earring of gold, and as an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.” If we listen to wise reproof, we will certainly be blessed. Similarly, by being a blessing, the wise speaker will be blessed. Proverbs 28:23 states, “He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.” The key word is “afterwards.” We should not expect immediate thanks. Most of us have a much higher regard for the rebuke of parents, teachers, and coaches years after their correct and correcting words were uttered. Because our sin nature permeates the voice box, it is difficult to swallow criticism and even more difficult to voice thanks for that criticism. However, over time, we may gain a greater hearing, one based on respect. Good words are good for a long time – there is no expiration date.
