Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Last week, we began a study of the eternality of Jesus. In Revelation 1:8, we find these words of our Savior: “’I am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘[Who] is, and [Who] was, and [Who] is to come, the Almighty.’” Although it seems odd to put it this way, Jesus is eternal in the present. In practical terms, He is the same today as He always has been and ever will be. The verb “is” directs us to the immutability of Jesus: as Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ [is] the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” I John 4:8 and 16 both state that “God is love.” The present tense again points us to the fact that Jesus does not change and thus that His love does not change. He loved before men were created, for love is intrinsic to the nature of God and is an integral part of the eternal relationships found within the Trinity between Father, Son, and Spirit. From that eternal love came Creation, including the creation of man. The love that Jesus has for us, then, does not waver or wane, for Jesus Himself cannot and will not change.
