Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Before we leave our study of the remarkable fact that Jesus sets us free (John 8:28-32), let us consider His words from John 8:34-36. Verse 34 clarifies that each one of us is “the servant of sin.” Thus, we obviously need emancipation. Verse 35 tells us that this freedom is not bequeathed by a “servant” but by “the Son,” One Who is a partaker of all family privileges and can confer these privileges on others. As an analogy, a judge may or may not set someone free. Even if that judge decides to set a person at liberty, he does not then adopt the former prisoner. Jesus, however, does both. Romans 8:16-17 proclaims, “The Spirit [Himself] beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.” This is genuine freedom to live differently now and forever, and it is granted to us by the One – the only One – Who has the requisite authority. “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
