Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Revelation 21:21 adds further remarkable detail regarding the heavenly city: “And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.” Most ladies would likely agree that a string of pearls is better than a single pearl – and in a sense that is what our future home provides, with three pearly gates on each side. We are not told how large these gates are; given the massive expanse of the city, they could be enormous. Even if they are on a scale comparable to those found in earthly walled cities, they would still be overwhelming in their immense beauty. Furthermore, any inhabitant of “the holy city” (Revelation 21:2) would approach these gates by walking on a street of “pure gold.” Even the paving of heaven will be breath-taking! The description of this gold as being like “transparent glass” reminds us that it is different from the gold that we know here – different and superior. A string of pearly gates in a setting of transparent gold – certainly Jesus is the Jewel of Jewelers!
