Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
As we close out another calendar year, I think of Psalm 90:10: “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” This statement is not bleak nor morose. It is a realistic assessment of the relative brevity of earthly life, a result of mankind’s sin. Moses, the writer of this Psalm, added a specific application in verse 12: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” We do not know the number of days left to us, of course. What God is commanding of us is that we value each day by seeking His way (Matthew 6:33a – “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness”) and His “wisdom.” As we saw yesterday from Colossians 4:2-6, one important aspect of this wisdom is “redeeming the time” – whatever time we have – toward those who need Jesus as Savior. Hebrews 9:27 states that “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Time is short now – but not then. Let us “apply our hearts unto wisdom” in our relationships with all, including unbelievers, who need to hear about Jesus and heed His eternal call.
