Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) reveals that He reigns, as we have been considering in our overview of Revelation 11. Jesus reigns over all (11:13), including earth (11:15) and life itself (11:5). To these truths, we must add that Jesus rules over death: He alone possesses “the keys of hell and of death” (Revelation 1:18c). It is only when the two witnesses have completed their work that they die: “And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them” (11:7). This is not the end of their story, as we will see when we return to these verses in greater detail. For today, though, let us reflect on the absoluteness of Jesus’ reign. As a familiar hymn states, “Mortals are immortal here until their work is done.” Since we are reading this devotional today, we all still have work to do for our Savior God!
