Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Sometimes we have trouble trusting people – with good reason. Probably all of us have found that at times our trust has been misplaced. The great exception is the One Who can always be trusted, Jesus Christ. It has been said that availability is the greatest ability; I would argue that dependability is the greatest ability. Of course, since Jesus is both available and dependable, we do not have to quibble! Matthew 12:18a, quoting from Isaiah 42:1-4, records the words of God the Father regarding God the Son: “Behold My Servant, Whom I have chosen.” Thus, Jesus was a chosen servant. He was completely (and voluntarily) dependent on the will of the Father. In fact, Jesus said in John 8:29, “I do always those things that please Him.” A servant (the Greek  word means “slave”) does the dirty work, the work that no one else wants to do. Jesus did this hard work. In fact, He not only did the work that no one else wanted to do but also did the work that no one else could do. Thus, Jesus is dependable because He understands dependence and has demonstrated it to us. Jesus can therefore be trusted with our lives – with my life and yours.
