Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

On Wednesday of Holy Week, Jesus spent considerable time at the Temple in Jerusalem, continuing His teaching ministry to the public (Matthew 24:1), before moving to the Mount of Olives for a more private session with His closest disciples (Matthew 24:3). This precious time with the Savior included an emphasis on future events and the necessity of present readiness for eternity (Matthew 24-25, often called the Olivet discourse). At the same time, in contrast to all that Jesus taught, to all that was good and right, the calculating religious leaders “consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill Him” (Matthew 26:4). As we are meditating this week upon the lavish love of our Lord, there are others who will scoff at the Savior and, if it were possible, would crucify Him anew. There is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9) in this wicked world of woe – except Jesus Christ’s offer to “Make all things new” (Revelation 21:5). This offer is His eternal promise to every person who chooses the good and the right by trusting in Him for salvation.
