Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Because Jesus is rich, His people are truly and eternally wealthy. Paul wrote in Ephesians 3:8, “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles [non-Jewish people] the unsearchable riches of Christ.” As we saw yesterday, the title “Christ” directs us to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy regarding the messiah. Jesus, God the Son, came to us in His Incarnation; that is, He came as fully human while retaining His full deity. We must not forget how He came. He was confined in Mary’s womb for nine months. What an unexpected place for God to be! (As an aside, our culture’s present attack on the sanctity of life in the womb must be recognized as an assault upon God, Who is the Lord of life.) Then, Jesus voluntarily restricted Himself to a human body for more than thirty years. His full humanity is part of His “unsearchable riches” to us, for only as we reflect upon His sacrifices for us do we begin to better understand what He offers. May our hearts be “strangely warmed” (as John Wesley said of his conversion experience) as we meditate upon the eternal goodness of our Savior.
