Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

As we saw yesterday from Ephesians 3:14-16, part of “the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Ephesians 3:8) involves the Triune nature of God. “The riches of His glory” (Ephesians 3:16) must include the distinctiveness of the Trinity, for “His glory” is the fullness of His perfections. Four times in the New Testament, we find a “God is” statement. One is located in John 4:24: “God is a Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.” We should note that the word “a” is not in the original Greek, as is recognized by the fine New American Standard Version and other translations. We also need to remember that Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Thus, John 4:24 must be understood as a statement of the Triune nature of God. John 4:23 specifically mentions “the Father,” while verse 24 emphasizes the “Spirit” (see also John 15-16) and the Son (“the Truth”). Our relationship with God is thus a rich one, richer than any other relationship. Because we are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27), we are spiritual beings; this “inner man” (Ephesians 3:16, which we referenced yesterday) is thus eternal. Through faith in Jesus, we enter into an everlasting relationship with our Savior God. We are thus rich as members of the family of God, enjoying the fullness of His Triune character.
