Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Since Jesus is the Head of all things (Ephesians 4:15; Colossians 2:9-10), including the Church (Colossians 1:18; 2:19; Ephesians 1:22-23), He is the Head of each Christian. Each one of us must willingly submit to His holy headship. Submit? We do not like that word. It has such a negative connotation, but it has such a glorious outcome. The New International Version’s translation of Isaiah 7:9a is one of my favorites: “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” I like the idea of standing firm, but before I can do that effectively I must submit. The principle of Ephesians 5:21 must control our mindset and behavior: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Only then can we stand as we should. Let us never forget that the authority of Jesus has always been exercised for our benefit. When we submit to His headship, we are standing on firm ground, and we can flourish there as His power works mightily in and through us.
