Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In response to the religious leaders’ unfounded attacks on Him, Jesus concluded with a grim and gracious warning: “Verily I say unto you, ‘All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: but he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation’” because they said, ‘He hath an unclean spirit’” (Mark 3:28-30). In simple terms, the scribes were attributing the work of God the Holy Spirit through Jesus, God the Son, to “an unclean spirit.” Thus, they were calling the Spirit “unclean.” Since the Holy Spirit is the Person of the Godhead Who guides us “into all truth” (John 16:13), the rejection of Him and His ministry is the rejection of “all truth.” Persistence in this opposition is a decision to refuse the forgiveness offered through faith in Jesus, Who is “the Truth” (John 14:6). What is often called “the unpardonable sin,” then, is the continued repudiation of the Gospel message. Jesus’ words are grim, for “eternal damnation” is a reality. However, His warning is also gracious, for it gives everyone a chance to repent and receive His eternal forgiveness.
