Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
The second use of “Almighty” in the new Testament is found in Revelation 1:8: “’I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending,’ saith the Lord, ‘[Who] is, and [Who] was, and [Who] is to come, the Almighty.’” In the preceding verses, we find that “the One Who has His hand on everything” (the literal meaning of “Almighty”) has “loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father” (verses 5a-6b). There are five powerful and compassionate evidences of the hand of Jesus upon us in this passage. First, Jesus deals with us based upon His loving character; He does not have to try to love us, for it is intrinsic in His nature to love. Second, He has forgiven our sins. Third, His sacrificial atonement is implied by the expression “in His own blood”; His death in our places is a profound demonstration of His personal power in our lives. Fourth, His hand has lifted us up to reign as “kings.” Fifth, He gives us eternal purpose as “priests” in service to Him. In these very specific ways, our Lord demonstrates that He is “the Almighty” to us.
