Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
As we have been considering of late, our worship of our Savior God must have considerable continuity with the past while also demonstrating creativity: we need both “the song of Moses” and “the song of the Lamb” (Revelation 15:3). The heavenly lyrics here are certainly intended to instruct us in appropriate worship: “Great and marvellous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints. Who shall not fear Thee, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? For Thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before Thee; for Thy judgments are made manifest” (verses 3-4). These lyrics teach us much about our Lord. Implicit in each description in this passage is the immutability of God; that is, He does not and cannot change. He delivered the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt; He continues to rescue people from their sin. What Jesus was doing in Moses’ day, He is doing right now. This unchangeableness is the foundation of our confidence. A relatively recent development is process theology (also called open theology), a heresy which erroneously teaches that God changes. In so doing, it creates a god who is just like us except that he has more power. Who wants such a hand-wringing, insecure, unstable god? We have God, Who is blessedly consistent and consistently blesses us.
