Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
I John 1:5-7 is a familiar passage that employs the imagery of light and darkness. Verse 5 states absolutely that “God is light.” Since Jesus is God the Son, He is light, as He specifically claimed in the Gospel of John (8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36 – in verse 36, “While ye have light” should read “While ye have the Light,” for there is a definite article in the original Greek). By ourselves, we are people of “darkness,” in thralldom to our three spiritual enemies: the sin nature, Satan, and the world system that always opposes God. We cannot stumble our own way out of this darkness; we need light. The light of Jesus provides necessary illumination and understanding, direction, and a quieting of fears. What we first need to know is that “the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin” (verse 7). Only through faith in Jesus can we pass from darkness into light, form death into life eternal. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, ‘He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life’” (John 5:24).
