Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

Another beatitude in “the Revelation of Jesus Christ” (1:1) focuses on the theme of expectation: “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” The picture is of someone waiting in eager anticipation for something good, like a child on Christmas Eve or on the last day of school. The anticipation is part of the enjoyment. If there is a change of plans, whether at home or at work, I have always liked to have at least a little warning, a little time to adjust or get ready. There are some good surprises (I suppose – I can’t think of any right now), but we generally prefer the opportunity to prepare. Our gracious Savior has given us both something to look forward to and also time to get ready. He thinks of everything and provides both the anticipation and the satisfaction, both the prophecy and the fulfillment.
