Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus

Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)

As we began to study yesterday from John 8:28-32, one of the most exciting outcomes of following Jesus is that He sets us free. We sometimes speak of walking with Jesus; what an invigorating journey that is! Of course, we must be certain that our faith is fully and only in Jesus as Savior; otherwise, we cannot know His freedom. Verse 30 says, “Many believed on Him.” We would hope that their faith was sincere, but it was not. Verse 31 records, “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, ‘If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed.’” In other words, interest is not the same as commitment. Before we can enjoy the freedom that Jesus offers, then, we must commit to the One Who offers that freedom. Logically, the giver must be greater than the gift, and so it is with Jesus and His offer of freedom. If we place our faith in the Eternal Emancipator, then we are eternally emancipated. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
