Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
In Mark 14:12, we read of the events of Thursday of Holy Week: “And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, His disciples said unto Him, ‘Where wilt Thou that we go and prepare that Thou mayest eat the passover?’” At the beginning of His public ministry more than three years before, Jesus had stated, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, ‘Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled’” (Matthew 5:17-18). Jesus’ disciples (even turncoat Judas) knew that Jesus always kept His word. Because Jewish men were required to keep the Passover in Jerusalem, Jesus’ followers knew that He would fulfill this obligation. Yes, Jesus would keep the Passover in Jerusalem – even though He would be crucified there the very next day. Right to the end, Jesus would fulfill the Law perfectly, – both in letter and in spirit. His consistency is a divine example that encourages and challenges us. May we rest in His dependability, and may we be His dependable disciples.
