Jaw-dropping Jewels about Jesus
Rarely does Jesus, God the Son, do exactly what we expect of Him. It seems odd that He so frequently surprises us, given that He never changes. Hebrews 13:8 makes this absolute statement: “Jesus the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Still, though He is blessedly consistent in His goodness, Jesus does unforeseen things. Even when He does what is expected, He does not always do it in the way that we anticipate. Let us join with Jesus on a jaw-dropping journey. (I will be using this opening paragraph for each of the brief messages in this series. The following material will change daily.)
Mark 14:13 records the beginning of the preparation for the Passover: “And He sendeth forth two of His disciples, and saith unto them, ‘Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.’” Any Christian who takes discipleship seriously should appreciate this glimpse into the lives of Jesus’ closest followers. We know that the Twelve preached powerfully and performed miracles in order to direct attention to the omnipotence of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. They also heard the stirring public messages of the Savior and received intense and insightful personal instruction from Him. Hundreds and even thousands regularly flocked to Jesus. Being one of the Twelve was extraordinarily exciting. Yet, less exhilarating work also had to be done, for life is filled with such necessities. We do not know which “two” were sent on this simple but essential task. Did they wish that they could stay with Jesus? Did the other ten want to be entrusted with this particular work? We do not know, but a disciple follows the Lord’s command. The mundane must be tended to – and is likely to make up the larger part of the Christian’s work. If Jesus wants us to do something, it is important to Him, and it must also be important to us.
